In my opinion the cover design should be very crisp in smaller thumbnails with both imagery & titles capturing the essence of the story. Cover should not be overloaded. 
 

Fantasy is one of the most saturated book genres for sure, and one that has a lot of trends when it comes to book cover design.

Considering those two facts, it's even more important to do your research and competition analysis compared to other genres.

You can basically take two paths - try to design something that is trendy or try to design something that's different and that could be a trend setter.

Whatever approach you take it's important to follow the basic principles of book cover design:

• Don't make it too busy and try to keep it simple
• Make sure your text is legible and stands out
• It could be really important that your title is legible on a thumbnail size depending on the marketing approach
• Have a clear focal point - this could be one character, several characters, a thing, a location, or similar key element from your book
• Appropriate color scheme - go with something that makes sense and also has good contrast

In addition to those, from my vast experience of working on over 2,000 fantasy book covers, I think it's important to let go off the idea that your book can be fully summarized on a book cover design. I had numerous authors try and give me a 10 page brief with lots of characters and try to squeeze all of that into a design. That will never work and it's important to pick just one concept that can be represented without clutter, even though it may not fully represent what your book is about. There's other methods to show to readers what your book is about - back text, foreword, etc.

The most important thing to remember is that the cover is an advertisement and announcement of your book. Therefore, it should give the reader an idea at a glance what type of literature it is and what to expect. 

For example - if you publish classic heroic fantasy, it is advisable to keep the cover in the style characteristic of this trend. If your prose has an original approach to the genre, such as deconstructing the fantasy ethos, the cover should also reflect this by going against the trend of classic style. This will let the potential reader know if this is the type of book they are looking for.

This does not mean that you need to overload the cover with elements, on the contrary. The cover should communicate the key elements you want to interest the reader with. Leave the storytelling to the prose itself.

An important thing to keep in mind is how the cover will be displayed. Most self-published books are sold online, where the cover exposed is much smaller than in traditional bookstores.
