Yvetta D 5.0 (61) Graphics & Design Posted November 6 0 Try these techniques for traditional materials drawing and see where it takes you: 1. Arrange a still life solid white surface - something round, something tall, something square, something small... I recommend sitting a doll within your composition. Have an uneven number of objects. Ensure that the light falls from a single source - upper left or upper right 2. Divide an A5 notepad page into 4 parts. 3. With this A5 notepad step back far enough to not see any details within your installment. 4. With thin blue pencil sketch simple shapes of your composition. Use many scribble lines to find form. Draw the doll with simple shapes too. Oval for the head, bean for the body, cylinders for legs and arms, a cloud for hair. Do not add any details - just many-many thin blue scribble lines. 5. With a red thin pencil scribble shadows in the same manner. You will see shadow well if you have a single source of light and white paper under your still life. Do not draw what you don't see - it is not the time yet (read about light and shadow if you need a refresher) 6. Come closer to your still life. Refine your sketch, but stay within simple geometric shapes. 7. Refine your sketch further - now with a thin 2B pencil. Remain within simple shapes. Do not shade. 8. Cover your 1st study and two lower squares with a piece of paper, make sure that you do not see what your hand is doing and draw what you see in front of you in continuous line, imagining that you are envelopping the objects along the form that you see clearly with the separation of light and shadow. That will be a mess!!! 9. Uncover the bottow parts dedicated for sketches. Now you are ready to make a detailed sketch. 10. Make a black and white sketch of your still life in square 3. Shade along the forms as if you are hugging them with thin lines. Finish the sketch. 11. Draw the same in square 4 using blue, sepia and 2b pencils. 12. Go back to the first study. Join all the shadows in shapes. Can you see any figures in them? Maybe your messy sketch will give you some ideas about imaginary subjects that lurk within your still life? Now you are ready to render your still life in watercolor, oil or acrylic - any medium of your choice in your very own personal style. Ana V 5.0 (485) Graphics & Design Posted November 5 0 1. Practice Gesture Drawing: This involves capturing the essence and movement of a subject in quick sketches. Gesture drawing helps loosen up your lines, adds fluidity, and improves your ability to convey motion and emotion. 2. Experiment with Line Weight: Varying line thickness can add dimension and depth to your illustrations. Use thicker lines for foreground elements and thinner lines for background details to create a sense of layering. 3. Use Light and Shadow: Study light sources and practice shading techniques to make your drawings feel three-dimensional. Techniques like cross-hatching, stippling, and blending with soft pencils or charcoal can add depth and contrast. 4. Master Proportions and Anatomy: For character illustrations, understanding basic anatomy and proportions is crucial. Study references and practice breaking down complex forms into simpler shapes to achieve more natural, balanced figures. 5. Explore Textures and Patterns: Adding textures or patterns—such as the roughness of wood, softness of fur, or intricate patterns in fabric—can make your illustrations richer and more engaging. Experiment with different tools, like textured brushes or varied pencil strokes, to achieve this. 6. Color Theory and Blending: Develop an understanding of color theory to create harmonious and balanced color palettes. Practice blending colors to create gradients and transitions that add mood and depth to your work. 7. Utilize Reference Images: Don’t hesitate to use references for anatomy, poses, and lighting. Observing real-life subjects or photos can give you new insights and help you capture more accurate details. 8. Refine Composition Skills: Strong compositions guide the viewer’s eye and create balance in your work. Practice the rule of thirds, leading lines, and framing techniques to improve the storytelling aspect of your illustrations. 9. Experiment with Different Tools and Mediums: Trying new mediums, such as ink, watercolors, or digital brushes, can expand your skill set and inspire unique textures and effects that enhance your illustrations. 10. Review and Reflect: Regularly look back on your work to identify areas for growth. Analyzing your progress over time can help you refine your personal style and focus on areas that need improvement. Aztra.studio 5.0 (1856) Graphics & Design Posted October 28 1 Here are some extra pointers that have kept my creativity growing over time (mid level-more): Use Layers Strategically: Separating your sketches, linework, and shading on different layers keeps things organized and makes it easier to tweak specific areas without redoing the entire piece, also to know in what step of the process you need to work more. Experiment with Different Brushes: Trying out various textures and brush styles adds a unique feel to each piece. Ink, pencil, or dry media brushes can bring out new elements in your style and create a more traditional look. Study References in Detail: Break down the references you admire into basic shapes, light sources, and flow. This focused study helps you understand how structure and composition work and brings fresh insights into your own drawings, having other artist as inspiration for new techniques also works. Draw Inspiration from Comics and Videos: Comics and videos have great visual storytelling. Take note of how they use dynamic poses, composition, and expressions to convey emotion, and try incorporating some of that energy into your work. Set Small, Realistic Goals: Focus on achieving specific goals, like improving your shading or mastering a certain pose. Small, consistent wins are motivating and build up your skills naturally over time. Get Constructive Feedback: Sharing your work and asking for critique can offer new perspectives. Hearing what others see can help refine your approach or spark fresh ideas you hadn’t considered. Let Your Style Evolve Naturally: Don’t feel pressured to “find” a style right away. Experiment, play around, and let your unique voice develop gradually. Style comes through experience and trying new things. At the end of the day, it’s all about the love for creating. Every sketch, mistake, and experiment adds a little something to your journey as an artist. Flor Navarro 5.0 (4) Fiverr Freelancer Posted October 27 0 To improve your hand-drawn illustrations, there are several techniques that can be very effective, especially if you share my belief that practice and enjoying the process are fundamental. Here are some recommendations: Daily drawing: Dedicate time every day to draw, regardless of quality. This not only enhances your skills but also allows you to explore different styles and techniques. Learning from mistakes: Instead of getting discouraged by errors, analyze what went wrong and how you can improve. Every mistake is an opportunity for growth. Experimentation: Try out different materials and techniques. Playing with watercolors, pencils, inks, or even collage can open new doors to your creativity. Study references: Observe the work of other illustrators you admire. Analyze their techniques and styles, but always look for ways to adapt them to your own voice. Patience and enjoyment: Remember that the process is as valuable as the final result. Enjoy each stage, from initial sketches to final touches. Setting goals: Instead of striving to be the best right away, set short-term goals that allow you to progress gradually and sustainably. Constructive feedback: Share your work with others and seek critiques that can help you improve. Sometimes, an external perspective can offer you new ideas. Creating a personal style: Don’t rush to find your style; it’s a process. Allow yourself to experiment and discover what truly represents you. Finally, the most important thing is to be true to yourself and enjoy the journey of artistic development. Every stroke counts! Sheenize 5.0 (188) Graphics & Design Posted October 2 (edited) 1 From a personal perspective, I would just recommend drawing more. Some of the techniques that help me were: 1. USING REFERENCE - reference is very important, for everything you draw it would be for the best to use a good reference. 2. Redoing some of your older pieces and seeing the improvements. Seeing how much can I improve something from the older piece. 3. Watching good quality tutorials, there is plenty on Youtube, for whatever style you need, realistic, abstract, you guess, Youtube has it. Also I would say that you should focus on one thing at a time, not that you should only do that, definitely branch out, just try not to overwhelm yourself with constantly doing everything and trying everything, find something that is a strong point for you improve that and then try working on a weak point, that could be, shading, colors and even the program itself, it is very important that you are familiar with the program you use, because frankly there is so much more opportunity than just using paper and pencil like we were all used to before. I hope some of this can help! Tina N Fiverr Freelancer Posted August 31 1 Find your community - or make one! Having peers is crucial if you're not in a classical academic environment. You can never learn as much as from your colleagues. Explore museums, search for local workshops, attend gallery shows, conferences, live drawing lessons, and if there are none in your area you can always participate in online classes and connect with your peers worldwide. There have never been more free resources and content for studying and practicing than today. Practice DOES make perfect: with a daily habit of 20-30min you can build your visual library and skills, learn new techniques, gain confidence and build your portfolio which will lead you to new, higher-level clients. Focus on fundamentals: it may seem like the most boring part, but you can't build a house without the base, right? Research the art history, great masters, copy their work - not using digital tools, and study anatomy, color theory, stylization, composition, and storytelling. I won't advertise any online courses, but you can find them easily. Traditional tools and mediums: you can use graphics, crayons, pastels, pens, charcoal, and so many different mediums - and they all have their specific spirit. You will find your natural talent as much as you experiment. p.s. there are all sorts of papers, too See profile Link to comment https://answers.fiverr.com/qa/10_graphics-design/35_illustration/what-techniques-can-help-improve-your-hand-drawn-illustrations-r154/#findComment-1136 Share on other sites
