A professional illustrator's toolkit can vary depending on their specific style and workflow, but there are a few essential tools that most artists rely on. A digital drawing tablet, like a Wacom Cintiq, is a must-have for precise and intuitive drawing. Powerful software like Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop are essential for vector graphics and digital painting. Additionally, a good knowledge of color theory and composition can elevate any illustration. And of course, a creative mind and a passion for drawing are the most important tools of all.

Selection of software depends on what type of image editing is required. For simple editing task like background removal, erasing specific parts of an image, color corrections or image upscaling/resizing, etc. All these can be done using Canva and for image creations to advanced touchups, Adobe Illustrator is my choice.

Other tools include Adobe Fresco on the iPad, which is like Photoshop but only the drawing part. Photoshop or some other image editing program is also helpful to make image edits, colour correction, etc. If working digitally, create a lot of layers - it’s helpful to reposition things as necessary.

Honestly, I believe the medium you use doesn’t matter as much as the skill behind it. Whether working digitally or traditionally, what’s crucial is understanding what best helps you express yourself and deliver top-quality work. Personally, I prefer digital tools for their flexibility—especially helpful for commissioned projects with tight deadlines. I use Procreate for illustrations and a combination of Procreate Dreams and After Effects for animations.

Well I'm using Procreate on IPad Pro it gives me a possibility to create as many layers as I need. Usually I choose A4 paper size 450-500DPI. Also you will need apple pencil. You can save and share your project in different file formats. Also working on IPad gives me mobility

Professional illustrators commonly depend on a range of core software and hardware to create high-quality artwork.

Vector Graphics: To produce scalable artwork, the key software tools at the forefront are mainly Adobe Illustrator, InDesign and CorelDraw. Those who prefer more affordable software, a good alternative is opensource free software Inkscape.

Raster Artwork: Adobe Photoshop, Procreate and Autodesk Sketchbook are top choices for most illustrators who create stunning digital paintings with a variety of brushes which allows you to work freehand, blend color, and add minute changes to your images. Krita is also a good inexpensive option which shines when you need concept art done.

For hardware, a graphics tablet is pivotal. Among them, popular products like Wacom Cintiq allow you to experience drawing directly on a screen. Beginners prefer tablets like Wacom Intuos to get themselves accustomed to drawing with a pen. The market for graphic tablets is ever evolving and competitors like Xencelabs and xp-pen provide more reasonably priced alternatives for Wacom tablets.

100% sRGB color accurate monitors are salient for color precise error-free work, with a powerful processor and graphic card ensuring smooth performance.

These tools together help illustrators coordinate their process and make certain their work is efficiently dine and exceptional.
