Hello there! 

Not all techniques work for every country/area. It would vary from place to place. Australia and South Europe are very different and there are many factors that can help a home be more energy efficient but not all work the same.

Example: If you are living in a hot, tropical humid climate, then breezy with indirect light filled homes that allow for good air flow is important. Humidity can promote mould so light and the breeze can help keeping that way. Also, think where is the sun coming from? So, then avoid windows that will allow direct sunlight streaming into the home heating up the room, but make sure that wall facing the rising and setting sun is insulated to combat the heat.  Plants are very important too, it can be many degrees cooler with plants surrounding your home (inside too).  Using the roof with solar panels is popular and also having ceiling fans over air-conditioning can save a lot of energy (works well in tropical climates). 

However, if you are in the Netherlands where it can be cold, then this would be the opposite, but you still need good airflow.  The windows are best situated where the the sun rises and sets to help heat up the home and allow for good light. Good insulation to keep out the cold, keep in the heat but the home still needs to 'breathable'. It can get very humid in cold climates and again, this promotes mould.  A good idea for help with saving energy are heat Pumps - these are becoming very popular addition but are expensive but saves you money longer term.
