It's essential to stay updated on modern trends in web design and the webflow space.

HOWEVER, it's equally crucial to discern when to adopt these trends and when not to. For instance, if a new trend emerges and you promptly incorporate it, just like all your competitors, will you really differentiate yourself from them? Probably not.

But but but. 

Feel free to keep an eye on trends and stay informed. I absolutely do. One popular trend today is minimalism. However, at a certain point, it became so popular that websites started to look plain and uninteresting. As a result, people began reintroducing background images to bring visual appeal back to the sites.

Here is a list of trends that are popular today in web design: 

• Neon and Glow Effects: Designers are embracing the 80s and 90s with a vengeance but with modern tech.

• Retro Futurism: There's a nostalgic nod to what people in the past thought the future would look like. This includes bold, geometric shapes, and a color palette that might make you think of old sci-fi movie posters.

• Minimalism with a Twist: While minimalism isn't new, it's getting a twist. Imagine minimalism but with one or two elements cranked up to 11. Maybe it's an oversized, bold typography or a single, vibrant color against a stark background.

• Dark Mode Dominance: Not just for battery life anymore, dark mode is now a design statement. It's not just dark backgrounds; it's about creating an atmosphere, with elements that pop against the darkness.

• ChatGPT & AI: They're not just for answering questions. I use them to brainstorm, get fresh perspectives, and sometimes, just for a laugh when they try to describe the latest design trend.

Workshops and Webinars: Occasionally, I dive into live sessions or recorded talks from conferences like Smashing Conf or An Event Apart. It's like getting a front-row seat to the future of design.

Community Engagement: Participating in forums, local meetups, or online communities like Reddit's r/web_design or CSS-Tricks. It's here where the grassroots trends start bubbling up.

Tech Updates: Keeping an eye on new tools, software updates, and platforms like Webflow. Sometimes, the technology itself drives design trends.

Critical Eye: Lastly, I analyze. Not every trend is worth following. Like a seasoned chef, I decide what ingredients to add to my design dish and what to leave out.

 

From a trends point of view, there is no better way than doing competitor research as part of the design process. If I need to do a plumbers website for example, I will spend a good couple of hours, seeing what's out there and then come up with a concept based on that. I never use templates and always come up with my own designs based on what I see, what I feel and what the customer is asking for.

From a technology point of view, I read a lot!   Up until recently I also lectured in many aspects of digital marketing, website designs and AI. This meant that I had to keep up to date with the latest tech to pass the info onto my students.  Journals, books, linkedin and networking groups are some of the best ways to do this.  But the great thing about my niche is that the tech knowledge comes to you organically.  If a customer asks for something you're unaware of, then you go out and find the information.  This can involve different software and plugins, or anything that is new to the market. 

So you have no choice really,  unless you're continuously learning then you will fall behind.
