As a Professional Designer and Social Media Advertising Manager, who has worked in this space for many years, my answer would be that designing for different social media platforms means tailoring your content to fit each platform’s unique strengths and audience habits.

It's more than worth it to take the time to do this because if you're not doing this, you're wasting your own time by reposting or sharing content that is not fit for the platform so will not perform well.

These would be my rules of thumb:

  • Instagram: Focus on short, snappy visuals. Carousels filled with valuable educational text perform well and users can save or screenshot them. For reels and stories, where possible, I recommend adding sound, voiceover and trending music to these as people tend to listen to Instagram when doing housework, running etc.
  • YouTube: Engaging thumbnails and titles. For YouTube Shorts, I recommend adding sound, voiceover and trending music to these as people tend to listen to YouTube Shorts when doing housework, running etc.
  • Twitter / X: Conversational graphics
  • LinkedIn: Professional, value-driven content
  • Facebook / Meta: Combine visuals and text for shareable, community-focused posts
  • Pinterest: Design visually appealing, vertical pins that inspire and inform
  • TikTok: Prioritize short, dynamic videos with trending audio and relatable storytelling and your opening 'hook' is all important. I recommend adding sound, voiceover and trending music to these as people tend to listen to TikTok when doing housework, running etc.

Always keep the platform’s format and audience behavior in mind to maximize impact. Think about how YOU use the platform and the challenges you face, what bothers you (text too small, frames move too quickly to read the text, no audio) and try to make content that will be easy and a pleasure for the viewer to watch.

When designing for different social media platforms, my approach focuses on tailoring content to fit each platform’s unique format, user behavior, and engagement style. Here’s how I handle it:

1. Understand Platform Specifications

Each platform has distinct requirements for image dimensions, file types, and character limits. For example:

Instagram thrives on visually captivating posts (square or vertical) and Stories.

Facebook supports diverse formats but prioritizes community interaction and sharing.

Twitter favors concise, attention-grabbing visuals with brief, impactful text.

LinkedIn calls for professional, informative content with clean designs.

2. Adapt to Audience Behavior

The audience's expectations and behavior vary across platforms.

On Instagram, users seek visually inspiring and aspirational content.

Facebook audiences appreciate engaging posts that encourage discussion.

LinkedIn users look for professional, value-driven designs that convey expertise.
Understanding these nuances ensures designs speak directly to platform-specific users.

3. Maintain Consistent Brand Identity

While designs are optimized for different platforms, I ensure the core brand elements—logo, colors, typography—remain consistent. This reinforces brand recognition across all touchpoints.

4. Leverage Platform Features

I make the most of platform-specific features:

Instagram Stories/Reels for dynamic, short-form videos.

Facebook Carousels for showcasing multiple products or services.

LinkedIn Banners to highlight key campaigns.

5. A/B Testing and Feedback

I monitor performance and conduct A/B testing to refine designs. Insights from analytics and user feedback help optimize visuals for better engagement.

This approach ensures that each design not only fits the technical requirements but also aligns with audience expectations, maximizing impact on every platform.

Designing for each platform involves embracing its distinct "personality." I tailor storytelling to match audience behavior—using vibrant visuals for Instagram, maintaining professional minimalism for LinkedIn, incorporating playful motion for TikTok, and focusing on inclusive, community-oriented designs for Facebook. Rather than simply resizing, I reimagine content for each format, ensuring it aligns with the platform's purpose and algorithmic preferences. It’s all about creating native, action-driven designs that truly resonate.

When designing for different social media platforms, I adapt to their unique formats and audience behaviors by:

  1. Platform-Specific Dimensions: Use the correct sizes (e.g., square for Instagram, horizontal for Twitter).
  2. Tailored Content: Match content style with platform tone (e.g., professional for LinkedIn, trendy for TikTok).
  3. Consistency: Maintain brand identity across platforms while adapting visuals to fit each one.
  4. Engagement Focus: Optimize designs for interaction—e.g., bold captions for Instagram, shareable graphics for Facebook.
  5. Audience Insights: Understand platform-specific demographics to create relatable designs.

We hear a lot of debates and discussions around design thinking. The first piece of
advice is: Get into your user's mind.

The format of each post on Social Media is just the Form (size, 1080x1920). What's the juice of this design is how well you engage your energy into listening to what
people say about your niche. You need to find the insights, to build the design content.

Based on our buyer persona and the product or service itself, we can figure out what type of design we should deliver. What were fan-favourite features?

We want to  understand how fans behave and think, and then the fun part, comes...
It's the predicting part.
