What role does sound design play in your production process, and how do you integrate it with traditional musical elements?

Technically sound design is the main thing of music,

You can make vibes from it, From synthesizers you can make different sounds,

Leads, Basses, Plucks, Pads even drums.

The way I see it, sound design could be a little bit like building a set for a movie. You might have some really compelling character, and a great story to tell, but the right setting could really take it the extra mile and make the whole experience more immersive and engaging. This is why I think the role of sound design is just as important as everything else in music.

My understanding on sound design was formed when I realised that all sound is music and all sound is shapable to become musical. While some sounds fit into our understanding of natural sound, and the brain can fit those sounds into a mold, other sounds are completely alien to us. What I find the most satisfaction in, is taking real sounds which are wholly familiar to the mind of a modern human, and making them feel less familiar. For example taking an acoustic guitar and making it sound like a synth instrument with a creative use of plugins. (A natural instrument to an alien instrument) Or taking an electric guitar sound and trying to make it sound like an acoustic guitar. (A less natural sound to a more natural sound) Working with synths is great for breaking down our limited perception of what sound should be. Any sound can be shaped infinitely, this is the basis of creativity with sound.

Sound design is a foundational part of my production process because it lets me create a unique sonic signature and set the mood or vibe right from the start. I approach sound design not just as an add-on but as a way to sculpt the personality of the track. Here’s how it integrates with traditional musical elements:

Setting the Atmosphere: I often begin by designing ambient textures or specific synth tones that capture the track’s emotional tone, giving the music a solid foundation before adding traditional elements like melody and harmony. This atmosphere guides how I’ll use more conventional instruments later.

Creating Unique Rhythmic Elements: Beyond typical drum kits, I use sound design to create rhythmic sounds from unexpected sources—like pitched-down vocal chops, field recordings, or processed noise. These add subtle complexity and make the rhythm section more distinctive and engaging.

Enhancing Melodic and Harmonic Elements: For leads and chords, I design custom synth patches to replace or layer with standard instruments, making sure they complement the core harmony but also push it in new, unexpected directions. Layering designed sounds with traditional instruments like pianos or strings creates a rich, layered sound that feels modern yet melodic.

Smooth Integration and Cohesion: I use effects and processing—such as reverb, EQ, or saturation—on both designed sounds and traditional elements to blend them smoothly, creating a seamless sonic palette. This balance lets the production feel cohesive, with each sound, whether designed or traditional, working together to serve the overall vibe.

Sound design, in essence, is where I inject personality and originality, while traditional musical elements ground the track, making it relatable and structured. Integrating the two allows me to create music that feels fresh and distinctive yet musically engaging.

When we create music we create cinema and when we reproduce music we are in our movie and the task of a music producer is to give life to each scene and that each scene has a feeling and to take those feelings to something real, that is where our musical knowledge comes in. It is not only about making music, it is about adding elements that can express what the artist or band wants to generate in the listener.

Sound design is one of the most important thing that needs all of our creativity and experimentation in all the song productions. It can really define or make a song unique. I always try to use new and fresh sounds, and combining more than one is always very efective. This can make the difference within a regular song and an unforgettable one!
