Most of the plugins that compress the images truly are paid that's why I would recommend not using any plugin instead you should resize the image to the resolution that is required then use an online tool called tinypng which is great for compressing images without losing quality. It compresses the images to the 50%-70 of original image and that too without dropping the quality.

While there are a lot plugins available for image optimization like Smush, EWW etc, I recommend not to use any plugins to optimize images after uploading. Let me explain why:

More plugins mean more server request and response. When you upload an image, and the plugin tries to optimize it, it'll create server requests and take resources. That might affect the overall performance. Also, image quality could be affected.

What I personally do to avoid this:

• Convert the images into webp format
• Use properly sized images. For example, if you need an image for 720px * 1280px placeholder don't upload 4000*4000px images. Resize first and then upload.
• Even after converting to webp format if the image size looks big, try to compress them before uploading using online tools.

By following these simple things, I don't need a plugin for image optimization. One less plugin and that's my goal!

I normally use EWWW, Imagify plugins to optimize the website images. The free version is sufficient for optimizing a lot of images. If your website has a lot of images, then you can consider the pro versions.
