Proxy editing is the better choice when working with large video files because it makes the editing process faster and easier. For example, if you’re editing a 4K video on a regular laptop, creating smaller, low-quality versions (proxies) of the files lets you edit smoothly without lag. Once you're done, the software swaps the proxies with the original high quality files for export.

Online editing, on the other hand, uses the original large files the entire time, which can slow things down unless you have a powerful computer. For big projects, like editing a long 4K documentary, proxy editing saves time and avoids frustration.

One time I had to use online editor to complete my clients already started editing project. It just need adjustments. First I thought I should remake the whole project with a editing software on my PC, but realizing that it would take a large amount of effort, I started editing on the online editor.

I soon realized that it was a bad idea because the online platform was lagging too much and I small change would take alot of time to render and then allow me to edit further. It took hours for me to fix the video, and if the project was on my pc, it would have only took one or two hours.

I think if you have a very quick edit like editing  a short 30 sec reel or TikTok, only then you should go for online editing tools.
