Writers should establish a dedicated time each day for writing while keeping a pen and paper handy to capture spontaneous thoughts throughout the day. Creating a comfortable, clutter-free writing space is equally important, as physical clutter can amplify a writer’s mental clutter, making it harder to organize thoughts and get them onto the page. Eliminating distractions is crucial—this might mean silencing your phone and setting clear boundaries with others about when you’re available. These practices have proven effective for me and can help foster a more focused and productive writing routine.

You have to track your clients, your daily word count, and your milestones.

I have a tracking file that details each client's screen name, the service they ordered, the total word count, and how many words I need to hit per day to stay on target (and avoid working weekends - I'm a mom and my weekends are sacred). I also have set milestones (even in single-pay projects) that detail when certain pieces of the project need to go out for approval.

Maintaining that level of control and focus on each project on a daily basis is what motivates me to stay productive. Also, early on in my writing career (we're talking 13+ years ago), I would get in my head a whole lot. It's better to get your writing done and edit it than it is to try and perfect it while you're writing. All you're doing is toiling over the page in the process.

Getting to that point takes time and consistency. It also requires writers to be patient with themselves, which is easier said than done in a world that wants everything right this very second.
