Balancing creativity with genre conventions requires a nuanced approach. Understanding specific expectations of the chosen genre is essential, as these conventions serve as a framework to guide reader expectations and enhance storytelling experience. For instance, adhering to genre norms can help craft a narrative that resonates with the intended audience.
However, within the framework, there is ample room for creative expression. Innovative storytelling, unique character development, and original plot twists can infuse freshness into familiar structures, making the work stand out while still honoring genre expectations. The key is to strike a balance where creativity enhances rather than disrupts genre's integrity, ensuring that work remains engaging and authentic to both the writer's vision and the audience's expectations.

As an admissions editor, I often help applicants whose essays did not answer the essay question. Most admissions essays have clear requirements and limited space. Make sure you've answered the question explicitly, and then use creative writing to provide examples and make your story come to life! Don't forget to map out your essay before you begin writing, especially for admissions essays that require you to answer several questions.

It's a tightrope and there is no right or wrong answer. When I'm writing for myself, I'm incredibly bold. I write as words come to me and I couldn't care any less about the 'properness' of my writing. I'm leaving it all on the page. I'll address my mistakes during the editing stage.

However, when I'm writing on behalf of a client, I take a more measured approach. A client will pay me for my skills in specific genres. They are essentially paying me for the level of expertise I bring to the table. I have to let that expertise shine. If they're happy for me to run with it, then it's no-holds-barred.

It all depends on who I'm writing for and what their preferences are.
