One of the most important tips is to define the scope of work clearly and in writing. This ensures both parties are aligned on deliverables, timelines, and expectations.

A well-documented scope serves as a reference throughout the project and is essential for resolving disputes. While most clients are amazing to work with, some difficult clients might push boundaries or try to take advantage, and a clearly defined scope protects both sides. 

Additionally, it’s important to be polite but firm in your communication. Maintaining professionalism is key—avoid being overly friendly or casual, as it may blur boundaries and make it harder to address concerns later. Stick to respectful yet assertive communication, ensuring that you express your points clearly without sounding defensive.

By being both approachable and professional, you can build positive relationships while maintaining control over your work process.

Communicate as much as possible. Regardless of who the buyer is (or their apparent level of intelligence) explain things simply and neatly. Use bullet points. 

 

Be very neutral. Don't be friendly with people unless they have proven that they themselves are friendly - but much more importantly RESPECTFUL. 

I have found that if the initial message of a buyer is too friendly - for example if they call you "bro" or use a number of emojis - those are often times the most problematic people to work with/for. 

For a stranger (a buyer), to try to be too friendly and suck up to another stranger (you, the seller) show's a lack of self esteem and a lack of professionalism. Be especially neutral to these people. Don't use emojis back, and use your communication skills to make it clear that you are a professional, not their friend. 

Be aware of different cultures and try to learn what people in different cultures act like. For example communicating and working with someone from the Caribbean, can be a very different experience to someone from Sweden.

This is why a very neutral stance from the very beginning of every conversation with a buyer is critical. You have to learn the person and their own way of communicating, and figure out if that will fit with your style of working.

 

Some critical questions you can ask are these:

- Are they new to Fiverr?

- What is their expectation? 

- Are they doing this project for fun, or for something important like a project?

 

Shaping your gigs with questions for potential buyers so you can gain some insight even before the order has started can be very helpful.

Always stay true to yourself and do not compromise. Be polite and understanding at all times, but remain firm and determined.

Be absolutely honest, don't be afraid to admit you're stuck and need more time to complete the job. Most clients are understanding and they will grant you the additional hours/days you requested. People appreciate a transparent seller, while they do not trust someone who fails to properly communicate or explain.

Stay active and responsive, use the site and phone app at the same time.

Open up and be friendly with your returning customers, but always remember to maintain a professional relationship.

Never take your clients for granted.

I must agree with all of the answers to this question that say "Set Expectations" This is such an important part of the seller-buyer relationship.  I often start the conversation asking for their timeline.  Sometimes its completely unreasonable.

For instance, a client may ask - I need you to read a 60-page document tonight and write a summary for me and a press release and 2 articles by morning! Whew.  I'm actually not joking. 😄

My suggestion is to explain your process and your availability.  I have had to turn down more than one project because it wasn't a reasonable ask and the worst thing that I could do would be to accept the task and NOT complete it in time.

Once you have a gig don't go ghost on a client.  You must touch them at least 1 time per day. I like to talk to my clients as soon as I receive the order and then each morning, I send an update, so they know I'm still on the case.
