People are sick of advertisements. We get marketed to everywhere all the time. But we connect with other people we can relate to. And when those people recommend a product or service, we may find we want it, too. 

People follow influencers they like and relate to. They're much more likely to purchase a product they see a favorite influencer enjoying than they would from a traditional ad. 

People are more suspicious of advertising these days. They want to know someone has tried it/read it/seen it/used it first. 

Word-of-mouth advertising has always been a very high-converting method and influencer marketing is another take on this.
